About Stevenage: the Old Town, New Town and neighbourhood life

Get to know Stevenage, from the historic High Street and Town Square to parks, local shops and its surrounding villages.

Two centres with different stories

Stevenage combines an older High Street with the planned New Town, designated in 1946. The Old Town has its own shops, pubs and services, while Queensway, Town Square and the surrounding streets form a separate town-centre destination. Knowing which part you need makes an everyday visit much easier.

The modernist clock tower in Town Square is one of the New Town’s distinctive landmarks. Stevenage Museum provides a starting point for exploring how the town developed, including its planned centre and the communities who made it their home. Its town-centre walking guide adds context to buildings you might otherwise pass without noticing.

Look at neighbourhood life as well as the centre

Bedwell, Broadwater, Chells, Shephall, Pin Green, St Nicholas, Symonds Green, Martins Wood and other neighbourhoods have local services and community spaces of their own. A Broadwater bicycle shop, a salon at The Glebe and a Shephall pub serve different everyday journeys.

Use the actual address to group your stops. The Old Town High Street and Queensway are different shopping areas, and a workshop on an industrial estate may need an appointment. A Stevenage postal address also reaches beyond a single compact centre, so check where the business is physically based.

Leave room for a park visit

Fairlands Valley Park brings lakes and open space into the local picture. It can provide a change of pace from shopping or appointments, with the council’s current park information helping you plan the facilities and access you need. Choose a walk that suits the weather, daylight and the people coming with you.

For a cultural stop, look at Stevenage Museum or the Gordon Craig Theatre programme. Their events, openings and booking arrangements differ. The directory’s What’s On page collects a checked selection for the current and following month, with organiser links for the latest details.

Keep the wider catchment accurate

Nearby places such as Knebworth, Old Knebworth, Walkern, Aston, Datchworth, Graveley and Todds Green have their own local settings. Great Ashby also needs to be considered on its actual address rather than treated as the town centre. This directory keeps those bases visible when a business is useful to Stevenage customers.

Stevenage Borough Council and Hertfordshire County Council have different responsibilities. Use the relevant council’s current information for an official service, and contact businesses directly for opening, accessibility and appointments. A mobile service can explain its Stevenage coverage without claiming premises in every neighbourhood.
